Football Association of Selangor, better known as FA Selangor (FAS) (now known as Selangor FC), is a professional football club representing the state of Selangor Darul Ehsan, Malaysia. Nicknamed the Red Giants, Gergasi Merah, or Merah Kuning (Red and Yellow), the association was established on 22 February 1936 when two football entities, the Selangor Association Football League (SAFL) and the Selangor Football Association (SFA), merged to form a new club. The FA’s crest is represented by a shield in Selangor’s traditional red and yellow colors. The red color symbolizes bravery while the latter represents the sovereignty of the King. Both of these colors are also very particular to the state flag, following the identity of Selangor. The logo is then completed by featuring the state’s blazon on the top of it.
Selangor FC, a club as rich in history as it is in accolades, boasts a storied legacy in Malaysian football. The club has served as the cradle for numerous local football legends who proudly wore the iconic Red and Yellow kit, adorned with the club's crest.
The esteemed list of former players includes formidable icons and legendary national players such as Mokhtar Dahari, R. Arumugam, Santokh Singh, Rusdi Suparman, Zainal Abidin Hassan, Mohd Amri Yahyah, Abdul Ghani Minhat, Soh Chin Ann, and Arthur Koh, among others.
Arguably the most successful team in Malaysian football history, Selangor's trophy cabinet is immense, highlighted by a record 33 Malaysia Cup wins, 7 league titles, 5 FA Cups, and 8 Community Shield victories.
In 2005, for the first time in the Red Giants' history, FA Selangor managed to win a treble under the guidance of Dollah Salleh after they won the Premier League, FA Cup, and Malaysia Cup in one calendar year.
Selangor is also the only team in Malaysian history to play in the final of the Asian Champion Club Tournament (now known as the AFC Champions League) for its inaugural edition back in 1967, bringing Malaysia's club name to the Asian level.
Since 1985, FA Selangor has partnered with many great business brands and entities as their main sponsor, such as Dunhill, EON, Celcom, Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (SYABAS), Telekom Malaysia (TM), Menteri Besar Selangor Incorporated (MBI), and PKNS. At the same time, Selangor has worn numerous brands of kit, such as Admiral, PUMA, Adidas, Lotto, Kappa, and the latest one, Joma.
Throughout the years, Selangor has called many notable places their home, such as the TCPA Stadium (1951-1957) and Stadium Merdeka (1957-1994), before moving to the state-of-the-art Stadium Shah Alam in 1995. Since Stadium Shah Alam is currently undergoing renovation, Selangor moved to Stadium UiTM in 2020, then to Stadium MBPJ as their home venue for the 2021 season.
At the same time, the remerging of the FA Selangor was spearheaded by Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, the first Prime Minister of Malaysia, as well as the first president of the association.
In 2018, FAS reached a new milestone when the Raja Muda Selangor, DYTM Tengku Amir Shah ibni Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, took over the top management row of the club and started a new revolution in order to bring the club to another level, restoring its glory and preparing the club for sustainability.
A couple of years later, the team, formerly known as the Football Association of Selangor (FAS), separated from the association to be recognized as a professional football club, Selangor Football Club (SFC), using an almost identical crest.
Both the football association and the football club now have their own vision and mission but synergize to uplift the football level in Selangor state as a whole.
The association will focus mostly on state-level league management, grassroots empowerment, and officials' training, while the club will concentrate on competition and sustainability at the professional level.
