2010-2019: Selangor Best XI As Voted By Red Giants


A few days ago, FA Selangor asked the fans for their opinion about which players deserve to be in the first 11 in 2010 – 2019.

In conjunction with the new decade, this is the list of the best 11 this decade based on the opinion of Red Giants fans.

 

GOALKEEPER: NORAZLAN RAZALI (2012 – 2013, 2015 – 2018)

He made over 100 appearances with the Red Giants squad. Hence it comes as no surprise when Wak Lan is the goalkeeper of choice for Selangor fans. He is also an important member of the squad that accomplished the 33rd Malaysia Cup for Selangor in the 2015 season.

His agility denied opposition players countless times and his natural leadership abilities in organizing the defense not only made him a well respected among his teammates but also by opponents as well.

Now he is with Melaka United for the 2020 season after leaving Selangor for Felda United in 2019.

 

RIGHT BACK: MOHD RAZMAN ROSLAN (2010 – 2012, 2016 – 2018)

Played over 11 seasons with Selangor, this best 11 team is incomplete without this defensive maestro who can play in both right-back and center back.

This unsung hero is actually a product of Selangor’s youth system and started donning the Selangor jersey from the year 1997. He made over 300 appearances with Selangor and won over 8 titles with the Red Giants which includes Malaysia Cups, Premier League titles, Super League titles, Charity Cups and FA Cups.

Now, he is serving as a player with Melaka United after joining them in the 2019 season.

 

CENTER BACK: MUHAMMAD SHAHROM ABD KALAM (2014 – 2016)

Served as Selangor captain for the 2015 and 2016 seasons, this player is an important member of the squad that lifted the Malaysia Cup in 2015. His good performance during the 2014 and 2015 seasons resulted in him getting the national team call up in 2016.

He made over 76 appearances with the Red Giants and his combination at the back with Robert Cornthwaite made Selangor one of the most impenetrable defense at that time.

He left Selangor in 2016 to join Perak and now plays for Negeri Sembilan for the 2020 season.

 

CENTER BACK: MOHD BUNYAMIN UMAR (2010 – 2017)

He started playing for Selangor in 2010, Bunyamin Umar stayed a Selangor player for 7 seasons.

This former Selangor captain is a very versatile player who can effectively play as a center midfielder, center back and a right back. More importantly, he helped Selangor win the league title in 2010 and won the Malaysia Cup with Selangor in 2015.

He left Selangor at the end of the 2017 season and joined Pahang in 2018.

 

LEFT BACK: MOHD ASRARUDDIN PUTRA OMAR (2010 – 2013)

The unanimous choice as the best left-back Selangor had this decade, Asraruddin started playing for the Red Giants senior squad as early as 2007. His calmness on the ball and strength allowed him to effectively play as a left-back and center back.

As an influential player, he was chosen as Selangor’s captain in 2013 after Amri Yahyah left for Johor Darul Ta’zim.

After making over 100 appearances as a Selangor player, he later made the switch to Johor in 2014.

 

CENTER MIDFIELDER: MOHD AMRI YAHYAH (2010-2013, 2017-2019) 

This list is incomplete without the legendary Red Giant, Amri Yahyah.

This Tanjung Karang born player joined and left Selangor twice in his footballing career. Among the many qualities, he possesses include scoring goals in crucial moments for his team which included the golden goal against Sabah in the 2002 Malaysia Cup final.

With almost 500 appearances for Selangor, Wak Am is the player with the most appearances for Selangor of all time. He is also dubbed the best Selangor player in the modern era after the late Mokhtar Dahari by many Selangor fans.

 

CENTER MIDFIELDER: SAFIQ RAHIM (2007 – 2008, 2010 – 2013)

Another player that many say is one of the best modern-era Selangor players, Safiq Rahim made his name as one of the best ever playmakers that Harimau Malaya had.

The highlight of his career came in 2010 where he not only helped Selangor win the league title and the Charity Cup, Safiq also helped Malaysia win the AFF Suzuki Cup together with Razman Roslan, Asraruddin Putra, Amri Yahyah, Amirul Hadi Zainal and Safee Sali.

After making over 60 league appearances with the Red Giants, he moved to Johor Darul Ta’zim in 2014 and now plays with Melaka United.

 

LEFT WINGER: ANDIK VERMANSAH (2014-2017)

This agile player from Indonesia not only plays well on the field, but his presence in Shah Alam Stadium triggered many Indonesian fans to also support Selangor.

His excellent dribbling abilities and accurate crossing made him an important asset to the Selangor attack.

He joined Selangor in 2013 and made over 70 league appearances before joining Kedah in 2018.

 

RIGHT WINGER: AMIRUL HADI ZAINAL (2006 – 2012)

Scoring 67 goals from 113 appearances with the Red Giants squad, Amirul Hadi built his own legacy in Shah Alam Stadium.

With his quick feet and accurate crossing, Amirul was called up to join the national team that brought home the AFF Suzuki Cup in 2010. His partnership with Azidan Sarudin often become talking points with Selangor fans.

With the Red Giants, he won 5 titles including Super League trophy, FA Cups and Charity Cups. Now, he is serving as a coach with Johor Darul Ta’zim.

 

STRIKER: RUFINO SEGOVIA (2017 – NOW)

Selangor never faced any shortage of venomous strikers, be it imports or local players. Among the names that fans repeatedly chant are Ifedayo Olusegun, Paulo Rangel, Guilherme de Paula and many more.

However, the player that Selangor players chose as one of the best this decade is the former Atletico Madrid player, Rufino Segovia. Playing for Selangor since 2017, he made over 47 appearances and scored over 41 goals.

Among the highlights of his time so far with Selangor is winning the golden boot for the 2018 season after scoring 19 league goals that season.

Sadly, his 2019 season was cut short after he was struck by a long-term injury that forced him out for the rest of the season. He is expected to return to action for Selangor in 2020.

 

STRIKER: AHMAD HAZWAN BAKRI (2014-2016)

Making over 80 appearances over 3 seasons with Selangor, he built a legacy his own with Selangor fans.

Hazwan Bakri became an icon for Selangor fans after scoring the winning goal that clinched the 33rd Malaysia Cup in 2015.

In the same season, Hazwan became the player that was chosen as Man of the Match the most times, including the man of the match award in the Malaysia Cup final after scoring 2 goals against Kedah.

He later left for Johor Darul Ta’zim in 2017.
