MATCH REVIEW: Red Giant Forced To Share Points At UiTM Stadium (CIMB Liga Super 2020)


The Selangor plans to continue their winning streak was not destroyed after being tied with a 1-1 draw with Melaka United at the UiTM Stadium in Shah Alam, last night.

Both teams started fiercely at the beginning of the game with frequent reciprocal attacks.

Selangor goalkeeper, Khairulazhan Mohd Khalid brilliantly saved a free kick attempt from Melaka import player, Sony Norde earlier in the 8th minute of the game.

Selangor, who has the lion share of the ball possession, managed to create several chances through Brendan Gan and Sandro Da Silva but failed to get past the Melaka United goalkeeper, Khairul Fahmi Che Mat.

The visitors first opened the scoring in the 39th minute after a low shot from outside the penalty box by Uche Agba failed to be saved by Khairulazhan.

Shocked by the goal, the Red and Yellow squad continued to launch a counter-attack and managed to equalize a minute after through Sandro Da Silva with a brilliant finisher after receiving a beautiful pass from Ifedayo Olusegun.

A total of four changes were made by both teams in the second half with Selangor replacing Halim Saari, K. Prabakaran, Syazwan Zainon, and Sandro Da Silva with Ashmawi Yakin, K. Sarkunan, Wan Zack Haikal, and Rufino Segovia to find the winning goal.

Rufino Segovia had had the chance to become the hero for the Selangor fans but his two attempts at the end of the game failed to find the back of the net.

The Selangor key player, Brendan Gan was given the marching order after receiving his second yellow card late in the game and will be suspended for the next game.

The 1-1 result remained until the final whistle.

Speaking to the media immediately after the final whistle, Selangor head coach, B. Satiananthan admitted that his men need to work harder for the next 4 matches.

"We still have 4 matches left, opportunities are still there and anything can happen. We have to keep working hard for it," Satiananthan commented.

The draw saw Selangor remains in 6th place in the CIMB Super League 2020 by collecting 10 points from 7 matches and separated by only 1 point behind Perak in second place in the league with 11 points.

The Red Giants squad will face the league leader, Johor Darul Ta’zim at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium, Iskandar Puteri for the next match on 19 September 2020.
