Syahmi Safari: Keep Trying, Keep Pushing

Selangor is known as one of the teams that often produce talented young players who become successful in the Malaysian League.

Syahmi Safari, the 2016 Selangor President development player who is famous among the Red Giants supporters, has just been announced to remain with the main team for the next season is one of them.

He is one of the young players who have managed to captivate the Selangor 2017 head coaches, Nazliazmi Nasir and P. Maniam to give him the opportunity to play in the right-wing of the Red Giants' main team throughout the season.

The Selangor born lad has made his first-team debut against Penang FA and scored his first goal in his third match of the Super League against PKNS FC on 4 February 2017.

Syahmi, who was 19 years old at the time, played for 90 minutes in almost all matches and was a key player of the team even though he was surrounded by more experienced players.

Syahmi’s confidence continued to rise when he was called to join the Harimau Malaya, Malaysia national team and was listed in the starting line-up in 2018 despite only two seasons playing in the Super League.

During his four years with Selangor, Syahmi has played 86 matches and scored 12 goals despite often switching positions between the right-wing and right defender.

Five young players who have just been promoted from the Selangor 2; Sharul Nazeem, Danial Asri, Aliff Haiqal Lau, Zikri Khalili, and Sikh Izhan Nazrel are set to have the same opportunity as Syahmi after they were just announced last week to don the Red Giants’  jersey next season.

Syahmi had the opportunity to share some advice with them from his experience of four years playing as a senior player of the Selangor team at a young age. Syahmi wants them to take advantage of this opportunity and make the most out of it.

"These young lads are surrounded by good local and import players. My advice is for the, (young players) to learn from them. An opportunity like this does not come twice,” said Wakmi, his nickname.

“If you do not get the opportunity to play, keep trying, and keep pushing, you have to work hard to seize the opportunity. Do not give in quickly because to be listed on the main team is very difficult. Learn good things for yourself from senior players, this is important,” he added, hoping that new young players will not give up easily.

"We play football not only for today but for the next day too. This is how we put food on the table, so protect it as best as you can. Take care of yourself and I wish them the best of luck,” said Syahmi who will play for the fifth year in the Selangor main team.

Selangor FC hopes that the young players can listen to advise from Syahmi and prepare themselves to play at the Liga Super Malaysia competition next season. Good luck!
