Dec 07, 2020 - FASSelangor FC today announced the first new player for the upcoming Malaysian League season as the national striker, Shahrel Fikri is named as the latest Red Giant.
Shahrel, who previously had an excellent goal scoring record with The Boss Gaurus last season, will be paired with the winner of the 2020 Golden Boot Winner, Ifedayo Olusegun, and the top local scorer of the 2020 Premier League, Ahmad Danial Asri.
The move also saw him join forces with two other former Perak players; Brendan Gan and Nor Hakim Hassan who have just recovered from injuries and are expected to return to the main team by early next season.
Known as "Eky" among Malaysian football fans, Shahrel was deemed as one of the deadliest local strikers after scoring 10 goals from 10 matches for last season.
Meanwhile, for the national team side, he is regularly listed in the starting line-up and entrusted by the Harimau Malaya gaffer, Tan Cheng Hoe to lead the attack with Syafiq Ahmad and Mohamadou Sumareh.
The soon to be 27-year-old player has also made 14 appearances and has scored five goals so far for the national squad. He made his debut for the national colours against Syria and scored the first international goal against Cambodia in 2018.
Apart from playing for local football teams such as PKNP and Perak, Shahrel has also played for Thai club, Nakhon Ratchasima as a loan player for a season.
According to the Chief of Executive Officer of Selangor FC, Dr. Johan Kamal Hamidon, Shahrel Fikri's participation in the Red Giants team is very exciting news for the Selangor coaching staff.
"Eky (Shahrel) is one of the most talented players in Malaysia. We have been watching and following Eky's development closely as Perak and national team players for quite some time. Alhamdulillah, after a few months, Coach Michael (Feichtenbeiner) and Coach Karsten (Neitzel) are very happy because Selangor FC has managed to sign Shahrel as our main and marquee player for the next season," explained Dr. Johan.
"Eky has proven his ability and sharpness to challenge foreign players in the goal scorers chart last season. We believe that Eky can become a better player and able to rise to a higher level, besides being an important striker to bring more victories for Selangor and also the national squad," he added.
Speaking to the Selangor FC media, Shahrel Fikri is thrilled to join the Red Giants family.
“I thank the supporters and management of the Perak team for everything. Joining Selangor will open a new chapter in my career and I can't wait to start my new journey with the Red Giants,” explained Shahrel.
“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the management of Selangor FC, especially the Raja Muda of Selangor, DYTM Tengku Amir Shah for the opportunities provided. I hope Selangor supporters will welcome me to Shah Alam with open arms. ”
Selangor FC wishes Shahrel Fikri good luck and prays that he will be able to bring a big impact to the Red Giants for Malaysia League next season.
