KNOW ME BETTER: Aliff Haiqal

Aliff Haiqal Lokman Hakim Lau (Aliff Haiqal) or better known as Nonet in the team, is the first player from Selangor 2 to be promoted to the Red Giants' main squad last season.

Since Haiqal was 3 years old, he started playing football with his father who was also a former Selangor player, Lao Kok Kit (Lokman Hakim Lau, after embracing Islam) until late 2011.

At the age of 12, he then trained with the CIMB-YFA youth team before accepting an offer to join the Malaysian Sports School Bandar Penawar, Johor (now known as the Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sports School).

However, Haiqal's name began to be the talking points of Malaysian football fans after he was selected as one of the winners of the football reality TV program, Mencari Ramli in 2013.

He was just 14 years old at the time and just wanted to try his luck, but his talent was good enough to bring to Old Trafford, where he was given the opportunity to train at the home of the English Premier League football team, Manchester United.

He later received a call up for the U-16 national team under P. Somasundra after performing well in the reality TV program.

The Kajang origin lad managed to make 16 appearances for the national team and scored two goals throughout 2014 until 2016. One of those goals was against the Iraqi team and has made him the 3rd best goal scorer in the 2016 AFC Champions League.

Haiqal's excellence with the national squad secured him a place in the PKNS FC President's team in 2018. A year later, he managed to convince the head coach, Datuk K Rajagobal and made his first appearance with the Red Ants main squad against Melaka FC in the Super League.

In the same season, he also returned to the President's squad when he helped the team to clinched the President's Cup.
His career with Selangor began after the Selangor FA and PKNS FC football teams were merged into one entity and he was absorbed into the Selangor President's Cup 2020 team.

The 2020 season was the sweetest year for Haiqal's football career when he excelled with the Selangor President team before the Covid-19 pandemic hit the national football scene, but good enough to capture the attention of Selangor 2 head coach, Michael Feichtenbeiner to play for his team.

Haiqal continued to gain the trust of the German coach to make his first professional career appearance with the Selangor 2 team against Kuching FA where he managed to score his debut goal.

After four matches in the Premier League, Haiqal’s meteoric rise football career hit a new high when he was his first appearance for the Selangor main team during the match against UiTM FC last season.

Apart from playing in the last three Super League matches with the Selangor main team, he also played in a Piala Malaysia match before the tournament was canceled due to the spread of COVID-19.

Last December, he was listed in one of the 25 players of the Selangor main team, along with 4 other young players for the 2021 season.

"I am proud and grateful to be given the opportunity to play with the Selangor FC main squad last season. This is one of the dreams that every local footballer wants, which is to play in the highest league in Malaysia," said Haiqal.

"My main goal is to give my best in every match and hope Selangor can win the championship and be able to return to play in Asian level," Haiqal said when being asked about his hope for the Red Giants squad.

Haiqal also felt that this can be a stepping stone for him to get the attention of the national head coach, Tan Cheng Hoe.

"Every player has a dream to play with the national team. I hope to play better with the Selangor team for the year 2021 and at the same time, caught the attention of Tan Cheng Hoe, the national head coach, and being called to represent Harimau Malaya," he added.

Selangor FC wishes more success for Aliff Haiqal Lau for the 2021 season and may he continue to show excellent action in the Malaysian football scene.

Good luck, Nonet!
