Shahrel Fikri Shares How He Cope With Depression

Mental health is an emotional expression that symbolizes the ability to adapt to the various stresses and demands of life. It is fundamental to the well-being of the individual and the ability of society to function effectively.

Mental health is also one of the important things in life that everyone needs to know to take care of themselves and those around us, especially when Malaysia’s suicide rates due to emotional stress have spiked recently.

According to Bryan Win, Selangor FC psychologist, small things can disrupt a person's mental stress and one of the best ways to treat it is to express the anxiety to family or peers.

"There are many factors that can affect a person's mental disorder even in the smallest of things and if not treated quickly, the stress will accumulate and continue to build on a person."

“For me, the best way to treat it is not to deny yourself of being depressed, but to accept that feeling and try to express that stress to those you trust like family or peers,” Bryan explains.

“People around you also play an important role, if you see family members or friends suffering from depression, ask them what happened and try to listen to them in order to relieve the feeling of stress,” he added.

Apart from Bryan, Selangor FC player, Shahrel Fikri also shared how he overcame the mental stress he once faced.

"All the cheers and jeers from the fans are part and parcel of being a footballer, but we must remember that everything must have a limit because we do not know one's personal mental state."

"All human beings have struggled with depression, for me, we have to always think about family and we only live once, so we need to know what is best for ourselves. In addition, we need to make ourselves happy by connecting with friends and talking about things that can reduce the feeling of stress," explained the national striker.

“There are many ways for us to reduce the stress we face. For me, when I feel depressed, I will sing and it makes me feel less depressed.”

In this urgent situation, Selangor FC hopes that all Selangor supporters can adopt the #KitaJagaKita attitude in monitoring the mental health of our friends and family members, as well as providing assistance to those in need.
