The Red Giants #TMPialaMalaysia2022 Challenge Is About to Begin

With three days to go, Selangor FC will begin their journey in the TM Piala Malaysia 2022 against Kelantan United in Kota Bharu, this coming Wednesday.

Just like the previous edition, a total of 16 teams will compete for this prestigious trophy but the competition format used in this year's edition is slightly different whereby there will be no group stage format as announced by the Malaysian Football League (MFL). All teams will instead play in a round of 16 matches (home and away), followed by Quarter-Finals (home and away) and Semi-Finals (home and away) where the Final will take place at a neutral venue at the end of November 2022.

After finishing 5th in the Super League, Selangor will be playing against Kelantan United, the team that also finished 5th albeit in the Premier League, at the Sultan Muhammad IV Stadium, Kota Bharu this 26th of October, before the two teams meet again for the second leg at the MBPJ Stadium, Kelana Jaya on the 1st of November 2022.

As we head away from home for our first match, it will not be an easy task for the Red Giants because most of the competing teams will definitely want to win the trophy because the winner of TM Malaysia Cup 2022 will get a slot at the AFC Cup championship 2023 next season.

If Selangor succeed and qualify for the Quarter Finals, Selangor will meet the winner of the match between Kedah Darul Aman and Negeri Sembilan who will be competing in the other round of 16 matches.

Based on historical records, the Malaysia Cup is the oldest and the most prestigious cup where the first time it was contested was in 1921. The history of the Malaysia Cup began when the HMS Malaya Cup was introduced in the name of a warship. In 1967, the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) decided to replace the HMS Cup with a new cup, namely the Malaysia Cup.

Selangor has successfully won the Malaysia Cup 33 times in which the Red Giants squad last won it in 2015. In the last edition, Selangor lost to the defending champions, Kuala Lumpur City FC in the Quarter Final round.

Good luck to Selangor FC for this year's edition! Demi Kebanggaan !
