Dec 30, 2022 - FASAs we draw closer to the end of 2022 which was full of ups and downs, let’s reminisce and reflect on how Selangor FC did this year. Let’s continue building on what we have worked hard as a team all year long as we bid farewell to a tumultuous season and welcome 2023 full of hopes and ambition.
In 2022, Selangor FC competed in three competitions: the Malaysia Super League, the FA Cup, and the Malaysia Cup. We finished fifth in the league with a total of 30 points from 22 games (8 wins, 6 draws, 8 losses). In the FA Cup, we finished the group stage as Group B Champions (9 points from 3 games), only to be eliminated in the Semi Finals by Terengganu FC through penalties. During the Malaysia Cup, we defeated Kelantan United FC with a 3-0 aggregate, defeated Negeri Sembilan in the Quarter Finals (aggregate 4-2), and eliminated Terengganu FC in the Semi Finals (aggregate 3-2) before finishing the tournament as runner-up.
Throughout the season, the first team played in 33 matches, winning 15 of them, drawing seven, and losing 11. We also had 10 clean sheets, 5 in the Super League, 3 in the FA Cup, and 2 in the Malaysia Cup.
In addition, the team scored 60 competitive goals in 2022, with an average of 1.8 goals per game, while conceding 39. Our winning streak was five games long, while our losing streak was in three meetings.
Among the scorers who have contributed a total of 60 goals were the team's striker, Herlison Caion with 24 goals; Norhakim Hassan with 6 goals; Hyuri Henrique and Brendan Gan with 5 goals; Yazan Al-Arab, Mukhairi Ajmal and Aliff Haiqal Lau with 3 goals; Hein Htet Aung and Syahir Bashah with 2 goals; and 1 goal each from Danial Asri, Shahrel Fikri, Safuwan Baharudin, Richmond Ankrah and Sharul Nazeem.
Mukhairi Ajmal contributed 9 assists; Herlison Caion with 6 assists; Hein Htet Aung 5 assists; Quentin Cheng and Alexander Agyarkwa with 4 assists; Aliff Haiqal Lau with 3 assists; Hyuri Henrique 2 assists; Zikri Khalili, Baha' Abdelrahman and Norhakim Hassan and Azrin Afiq with 1 assist each.
This season, all 30 players have appeared at least once, with four of them making their debut coming from Selangor FC 2 which are youngsters Rahman Daud, Izwan Yuslan, Richmond Ankrah, and Kelvin Kyei. Furthermore, other young players who have previously played for the first team, such as Mukhairi Ajmal (32 games), Sharul Nazeem (28 games), Zikri Khalili (26 games), Aliff Haiqal Lau (23 games), Danial Asri (17 matches), Harith Haiqal (9 matches), and Azrin Afiq (3 matches), have emerged as key players for the team this season.
Three players from the Selangor FC squad, Norhakim Hassan, Aliff Haiqal Lau, and Mukhairi Ajmal made 50 appearances for the club this season.
Following that, other notable accomplishments this season were made by two local players, Brendan Gan, who scored his first goal of the season in his first match after recovering from cancer, and Aliff Haiqal Lau, who scored his first three senior goals in three different tournaments.
Besides that, Mukhairi Ajmal, our young player who has stood out this year, recently won the Best Goal in the Anugerah Bola Sepak Kebangsaan 2022.
In conclusion, the team did relatively well this season with major improvements especially in the second half of the season of seeing some much needed changes. More roster changes, appointments, and club updates are expected to be announced in the coming weeks to strengthen the squad.
