Jun 28, 2023 - FASGhanaian national team forward, Richmond Boakye-Yiadom, better known as Boakye (pronounced as Bo-a-chi), was today officially announced as the latest import player for the Red Giants, completing the quota of nine import players that have been allocated for the 2023 season.
Born in 1993, his professional career began when he was 16 years old with Genoa in the Italian Serie A during the 2009/2010 season. In the 2012/2013 season, he was one of the players who helped Sassuolo FC become the Italian Serie B champions thus ensuring their promotion to the Seria A for the very first time in the club’s history, whereby he scored 11 goals in 32 games for the team.
Among the highlights of the 2013/2014 season, on the 25th of September 2013, he managed to score an equaliser for Elche FC against Real Madrid during a La Liga match, making him a popular figure in Ghana at that time.
This 186cm tall player’s career went upward since joining Red Star Belgrade (RSB) in Serbia. His team was crowned SuperLiga Champions for two seasons in a row, which is during the 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 season. He helped RSB win the SuperLiga by scoring 13 goals in 15 matches during the 2018/2019 season. In total, Boakye has scored 43 goals and 11 assists in 63 matches.
Another interesting fact about our new signing, he was also one of the key players to help Red Star Belgrade during his second stint there ensuring their qualification for the Group Stages of the UEFA Champions League for the first time after 27 years during the 2018/2019 season.
Wearing the number 9 Selangor FC jersey, he was also a national player of Ghana's under-20 and most recently the senior team until the 2022 season. He also played in 2 matches with the Ghanaian team at the CAF World Cup Qualifiers, helping the country qualify for the 2022 World Cup.
According to the Head Coach of Selangor FC, Boakye's experience will further strengthen the team for the remaining matches of the Malaysian football season.
"Selangor FC signed Boakye because we need some options in attack and at the same time, his experience abroad will especially help the team to perform better than before.
"I also see that his experience abroad will make him a good example, especially to the younger players in the way he manages himself to perform in a foreign country.
"I hope he will be able to adapt well here in the near future. Although he joined the team in the middle of the season, which can be challenging, I am confident he will excel and that his experience will add strength to the team," Tan Cheng Hoe is confident.
Boakye wants to help Selangor FC by giving a high level of commitment to the team and at the same time opening up more opportunities for African and Ghanaian players to play in Malaysia.
"I will train hard and be fully committed to the team to win together. For me, without the fans, there is no team. I'm here to be part of the fans and the club. To make history and to create a legacy.
“I also intend to open up better chances so that players from Ghana and Africa will have more opportunities to play here," said this Ronaldo Nazario de Lima fan.
Selangor FC management welcomes Richmond Boakye-Yiadom. We believe that his presence will add to the strength of the team.
Have a good fight with the Red Giants, Boakye!
