Selangor FC And Brendan Gan Bids Farewell

Selangor Football Club sadly confirms the departure of team captain, Brendan Gan after four seasons together. The midfielder will not be part of the Red Giants' team for the 2024 season.

Brendan Gan's arrival to the Red Giants camp appears to have breathe life into the chant of 'Mentaliti Juara', which is frequently used as this club slogan. Brendan, who is the team leader, is a person who always exudes positive vibes and a never-give-up mindset, both of which are essential in a team. For four seasons with the Red Giants, his fighting spirit has greatly aided his teammates, particularly the young players on and off the pitch.

Brendan Gan was officially announced as a Selangor FC player on December 1st, 2019, making him the club's marquee signing at that time. Merah Kuning supporters reacted enthusiastically to the announcement, citing him as a high-caliber player with strong leadership abilities. Brendan made his debut in the 2022 Super League match against Sri Pahang FC, wearing his new jersey number 88. He not only started in the starting eleven, but he also scored his first goal for the club in the 88th minute, as well as notching his first assist for the team in an impressive debut.

However, fate did not favour this fighter when he was diagnosed with testicular cancer in July 2021. After surviving cancer and enduring a 12-month rehabilitation session, Brendan returned with full eagerness to spearhead Selangor FC in a Super League encounter with Sarawak United on September 19th, 2022. Even better, Brendan only took 7 minutes to score the first goal, instilling confidence in the Red Giants team and inspiring them to a 7-0 victory.

The rise of Brendan's career is not only that, he also managed to win the heart of the National Head Coach, Kim Pan Gon and received a national call up again with his excellent performance with Selangor FC after recovering from cancer. Since then, Brendan has played in several international friendlies and became one of the players who helped Malaysia qualify for the 2023 Asian Cup. Recently, he was named in Malaysia's starting line-up against the Republic of Korea, which saw Harimau Malaya draw level with the Asian giants 3-3 in the final Group E match of the tournament in Qatar. So far, he has played in 35 matches, scoring one goal and scoring three assists for the national team.

In addition, the 2022 SFC Away jersey was inspired by Brendan's battle with cancer, from which he has recovered thankfully. The jersey was created to raise awareness about cancer, with one of the main purpose of the campaign being to send a message of hope to everyone that cancer can be overcome and cured. It is consistent with his guiding life principle, 'We can overcome everything!', which he frequently use to all of his teammates and SFC colleagues.

Throughout his stint with Selangor FC, Brendan has made a total of 80 appearances, of which he started in 75 of them and wore the captain's armband for the majority of the matches. He has also contributed 14 goals and got 12 assists during his four seasons with the team as a midfielder. Not to be forgotten, his 12th  and final assist helped Selangor FC defeat their close rivals, Kedah Darul Aman FC to firmly secure 2nd place in the 2023 Super League and also confirm the team's qualification for the AFC Champions League 2 (ACL 2) 2024.

Brendan once made a tweet on his social media during the announcement of his first year with Selangor FC saying "I'm about to write my next exciting chapter as a Red Giant". To be honest, there are too much memories that come to mind throughout his time as a Red Giants player. There is no doubt that his presence alone has had a positive impact on the team. In addition, his professionalism in carrying out his responsibilities as a player on and off the field has also become an example to the young players here. However, every beginning has an end.

Selangor FC would like to express its highest appreciation to Brendan Gan for his leadership in guiding the team and all his hard work in displaying excellent performances every time he wore the Red Giants jersey. We would like to wish Brendan Gan the best of luck in his future plans. Hope we meet again. Once a Red, #foreverRED.
